Red Raspberry leaf (Rubus idaeus), is a pale-green leaf produced by the well known, perennial, raspberry plant. The leaf has been valued in folk remedies for centuries for its vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The therapeutic use of raspberry leaf was first described in 1597 in a book called “The Herbal,” or “A General History of Plants.” Don’t be expecting the sweet and tart experience of raspberries, as raspberry leaf, while renowned for therapeutic benefits, is much more herbal and plain in taste, as you may expect of any wild green leaf dried and infused. This loose leaf version will provide a much more bodied and dynamic herbal experience than those found in a lesser quality and finely chopped tea bag version. Those who love herbaceous wild herbs greatly enjoy red raspberry leaf as a “self drinker” while others may slightly sweeten their cup with honey, or combine with other teas or herbs. This particularly good quality leaf is due to the excellent cut, preserving important surface area. Caution: Please consult your primary health care practitioner regarding specific teas and herbs during pregnancy.
